What is your Steam store country, and can you change it?
Your Steam store country decides which codes work. Where to read it, how it changes, and why it cannot change often.
What people call a "region" on Steam is your store country. It sets prices, the currency, and which codes will work.
Where to read it
Steam → your account name, top right → Account Details. The country and currency are at the top of that page.
How it changes
Steam updates the store country from the country of the payment method you use. Paying with a card from another country can move it. Valve does not let you do this often, and changing country through a VPN breaks the subscriber agreement — it risks limits on the account.
What happens to your balance
Wallet funds stay in the old currency and may not be usable in the new country. Balance cannot be cashed out or moved to another account, so spending it before a change is the sensible order.
The practical rule when buying
- A wallet code must match your store country. Step-by-step redemption is in its own post.
- A game key is often global, but some are region-locked; the product page says which.
- Changing region afterwards does not make a delivered code refundable.
Account safety
